3rd SEDIBENG TOURISM AWARDS 2014 -VAAL REGION
The 2014 Sedibeng Tourism Awards were hosted by the Sedibeng District Municipality in partnership with the Gauteng Tourism Authority on the night of the 10thApril. The awards serve not only to recognise excellence in the tourism industry, but also to promote the region as the destination of choice for business, heritage and leisure tourism.
Stonehaven was honoured to receive the following 4 prestigious awards:
- Gold Award in the Outdoor/Adventure category
- Silver Award for the Restaurant/Eateries Category
- Silver Award for the Meetings, Exhibitions and Special Events Category
- Gold Award for Rosemary Anderson for Outstanding contribution by an individual to Local Tourism!

Stonehaven was honoured to receive an award and the first place prize for the Best Barman & Best Barman within the Southern Gauteng, Free State and Northwest Provinces!

Stonehaven is owned by the Cloete-Anderson Family and is the Vaal River’s social centre, a natural interface between locals and visitors. Stonehaven‘s fare is hearty in quantity and freshly prepared from local produce. Menus range from light pub meals to a more serious restaurant menu with a mix of classic and modern dishes. Besides the 10 acres of beautifully tendered gardens, there is the busy Stonehaven Harbour with a selection of Cruisers to choose from for your sized function – from 2 to 200. Successful Bird Count on the Vaal River
Members of the Vaal Bird Club augmented by members of Birdlife Vaaldam and the Feathers Bird Club (Parys) carried out a very successful count of the waterbirds on the Vaal River on Saturday 26 January 2013. The group, based at Stonehaven-on-Vaal, set out in 4 boats with each boat covering a specific 10 km section of the river. Birding on the Vaal at Stonehaven

Fishing on the Vaal River
Experience a 3 hour private fishing charter on the Vaal River aboard a luxury river cruiser complete with air conditioning, ladies & gents toilets, a fully stocked bar, tasty snacks and fishing gear with bait for the inexperienced first time angler. Try your hand at catching Yellowfish, Carp, Bass and more while slowly cruising the deeper parts of the Vaal River. With various certified cruisers available from a speedboat for 2 to a luxury cruiser for 40 people each with a certified Stonehaven Skipper chartering the waters there are no minimum or maximum amount of Anglers per cruise. The 3-hour Vaal River chartered cruise is R385.00 per person and departs from Stone Harbour at Stonehaven on Vaal - bookings can be made for any day, at any time of the year. Stonehaven is 45 minutes from Joburg within the Gauteng area and is located 23kms from the Barrage Wall on the deeper part of the Vaal River. Accommodation at Stone Manor located on the Vaal River can be made through Stonehaven's Reservations team where private bank fishing can be enjoyed.

Local Vaalies Take on the 2014 Cape to Rio Race
A few Vaalies got together over just the past few months and adventurouslydecided to take on the stormy seas of the Atlantic on the Cape to Rio YachtRace. The race started on Saturday the 4th January 2014 aboard their vessel"Rocket/Save the Rhino". They are hoping to sail their monohull vessel toRio in 21 days. No engines are permitted to be used in the race - it allhas to be under sail.
There were 36 vessels competing in the race and by the second day 10 vesselshad already pulled out due to the extreme storms and weather conditions,never before experienced in the history of the race. There were swells of10 meter high waves and many of the vessels experienced critical damage.
There were also a number of injuries aboard some of the vessels whichtragically included a fatality aboard the Angolan vessel the Bille when themast broke and hit one of the crew members.
The Vaalies have also experienced their fair share of damage to theirvessel, but have managed to do running repairs (repairs while still sailing)and are doing really well under the experience of Skipper Gerrie Boshoff,who has amassed over 60 000 nautical miles, which includes:- 9 Atlanticcrossings, 1 Circumnavigation and 5 Cape to Rio's and many others.
